13.10.2020: 15th online meeting of TC 1.2 "Acoustics. Ultrasound. Vibration"

15th online meeting of COOMET Technical Committee 1.2 "Acoustics. Ultrasound. Vibration" was held on 13 October 2020. Representatives of 8 COOMET member countries (Belarus, Georgia, China, Lithuania, Russia, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Ukraine) took part in the meeting.

The status of ongoing projects, being implemented within TC 1.2, as well as other issues, provided for in the agenda were discussed during the meeting (including update of the Regulations for the TC, development of a prospective TC 1.2 Work Program, implementation of events under the COOMET Development Program for 2020-2022 within the TC, holding of training seminars and traineeships etc.).

The main decisions made are:

1. To continue works on the following ongoing COOMET comparisons:

  • COOMET pilot comparisons 706/RU/16 "Comparison of the results of measurements of the propagation velocity of longitudinal ultrasonic waves in solid media": to complete the preparation of draft A of the report and to prepare draft B of the report following its agreement with all the participants of the comparison;
  • Supplementary comparisons COOMET.AUV.A-S3 (COOMET project 757/RU/18 "Comparisons of national measurement standards of the sound pressure unit in air in the infrasound frequency range from  0,1 to 100 Hz"): to continue works in accordance with the schedule of the comparisons;
  • Pilot COOMET comparisons 786/RU/19 " Comparisons of the results of amplitude and phase calibrations of hydrophones in the frequency range from 10 kHz to 500 kHz": to continue works in accordance with the schedule of the comparisons (a technical protocol was prepared, measurements started in October 2020);
  • Supplementary COOMET comparisons 790/TR/19 "Sound calibrators": to complete the preparation of a technical protocol of the comparisons (the list of participants has been currently agreed and measurement standards for the comparisons were chosen).

2. To add the following projects to the COOMET Program of comparisons:

  • Comparisons of calibrations of tone audiometers: representatives of 5 countries (Belarus, Lithuania, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine) expressed their interest in participation. It was decided to appoint BelGIM (Belarus) as a pilot laboratory and to request the representatives of VNIIFTRI (Russia) to explore the possibility of purchasing a tone audiometer to use it as a transfer standard for the comparisons.
  • Comparisons of calibrations of impedance audiometers: the project generated interest from NMIs of Russia and China. The stakeholders expressed their wish to further discuss technical and other aspects of the proposed comparisons during an online meeting, the TC Chair will be informed about the results of the discussion.
  • Comparisons of calibrations of ear simulators: NMIs of Russia, China, Turkey and Ukraine expressed their interest in the project. The stakeholders expressed their wish to further discuss technical and other aspects of the proposed comparisons during an online meeting, the TC Chair will be informed about the results of the discussion.
  • Comparisons of calibrations of standard microphones: these comparisons were proposed by a representative of VNIIFTRI (Russia) based on the results of key comparisons CCAUV.V-K6 (the comparisons are at the stage of completing measurements and preparing draft A of the report). Based on the discussion the representative of Turkey was requested to conduct an analysis of the possibility of carrying out the mentioned key comparisons of COOMET and of involving the NMI of Saudi Arabia.
  • Comparisons in the field of measuring the parameters of ultrasound field in aqueous media: it was decided to request the representative of VNIIFTRI (Russia) to officially inform the NMI of Turkey about the planned comparison to explore the possibility of participation in the mentioned project.
  • Supplementary COOMET comparisons in the field of vibration (based on the results of key comparisons CCAUV.V-K4): NMIs of Belarus, Ukraine, Turkey are interested in the comparisons. TC Chair was asked to make a request to VNIIM (Russia) about the possibility of taking part in this comparison.
  • Comparisons of measurement standards of low-frequency vibration: the proposal by representatives of the NMI of China on conducting a research to decide on the organization of comparisons was adopted.

3. Based on the discussion of the Plan of COOMET training activities for 2020-2021, the participants welcomed the possibility to hold training seminars online.  Moreover, the possibility of traineeships at the premises of COOMET NMIs was also discussed. Thus, BelGIM expressed its readiness to provide advisory assistance and guidance to the Vilnius Metrology Center in the field of air acoustics.

The next COOMET 1.2 meeting is scheduled for September 2021 at the NMI of Georgia.
