Introductory Seminar to the COOMET Project 445

The Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) in Braunschweig, Germany, 23 - 27 May 2011, organizes an introductory seminar to the COOMET Project 445. The PTB is the pilot laboratory of the comparison of air kerma standards for Cs-137 at protection level. The PTB and the VNIIM will be the link laboratories, because they participated in the corresponding key comparison BIPM.RI(I)-K5. Up to now, 6 further countries have confirmed their participation: BelGIM (Belarus), CPHR (Cuba), GEOSTM (Georgia), INSM (Moldova), NSC-“IM” (Ukraine) and SMU (Slovakia). The comparison is still open for further countries of the COOMET region. At the last meeting of the COOMET TC 1.9 in 2010 at BelGIM it was discussed that Romania and Kazakhstan may also be interested to participate. Some of the participants take part for the first time in such a regional comparison in the field of ionising radiation within the framework of the CIPM MRA. Therefore it was decided at the last COOMET TC 1.9 meeting that an introductory seminar in connection with this comparison project may be helpful. The TC recommends participation also for those countries of the COOMET region which do not participate in this project and for non-MRA signatories and countries without approved quality management system in order to get measurement routine and theoretical as well as organisational knowledge for future comparisons.

The goal of the seminar is to prepare the participants for the procedure to get entrances into the CMC list in the metrological area of Ionising Radiation, Section I, x and gamma rays. Topics of the seminar will be a review on the current status of air kerma standards, reference x radiation qualities used in radiation therapy, diagnostic radiology and radiation protection, calibration procedures and their uncertainties, general content of the CIPM-MRA, procedures of regional key- and supplementary comparisons in ionizing radiation (x and gamma rays), basic requirements on quality management systems. During the seminar there will be a practical demonstration of the calibration of an ionisation chamber in terms of air kerma at the x ray and Cs-137 irradiation facilities of the PTB.
