On 1 to 2 June 2023, an online COOMET training course "Calibration of infrared medical thermometers" was held, where specialists of Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Albania took part.

Leading specialists of the NIM of China acted as speakers at the course: Dr. Bai Chengyu and Dr. Xiaofeng Lu. The course program included the following reports:

• Infrared ear Thermometers and Forehead Thermometers;
• International standards on infrared ear and forehead thermometer;
• Calibration Method and Calibration Facility;
• Uncertainty  Assessment and Calibration Report;
• Comparison and CMC for infrared clinical thermometer.

A video was also demonstrated to the participants, showing the calibration process for infrared medical thermometers.

An extensive discussion took place with answers to the participants' questions. The knowledge gained will allow the specialists of NMIs of COOMET member countries to organize the calibration of thermometers in their metrological institutions, and to publish CMCs related to infrared thermometers in the KCDB.

The course made it possible to exchange views on the methodology for calibrating infrared thermometers designed to measure human body temperature; on the methodology for calculating calibration results, taking into account various uncertainties associated with the standards and methods used, and on the information about the standards (emitters) used in various countries and manufactured in accordance with different standards.
