17-18.11.2021: 18th meeting of TC 1.10 "Thermometry and Thermal Physics"

The 18th meeting of TC 1.10 "Thermometry and Thermal Physics" was held online on November 17 to 18, 2021. Specialists from 13 COOMET member countries (Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Lithuania, Moldova, Russian Federation, Slovakia, Tajikistan, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Ukraine) took part in the meeting.

During the meeting the results of TC 1.10 activities in 2021 and development plans for 2022 were discussed.

A detailed discussion of the progress in implementing all COOMET comparisons took place:

  • pilot comparisons in the field of platinum resistance thermometers calibration at the fixed points in the range from the triple point of water (0,01 °С) to the aluminium freezing point (660,323 °С) (project COOMET 787/UZ-а/19);
  • pilot comparisons of measurements in the field of platinum resistance thermometers calibration at the fixed points in the range from the triple point of mercury (-38,8344 °С) to the gallium melting point (29,7646 °С) (project COOMET 771/MD/18);
  • comparisons in the field of measuring the combustion energy of coals  with different sulphur content (project COOMET 744/RU-a/18);
  • comparisons of national standards at the triple point of mercury (project COOMET 704/RU-a/16).

The participants of the meeting supported the proposals on the organization of new comparisons of measurement standards of dew point temperature, as well as key comparisons of standard bomb calorimeters using high-purity benzoic acid, and pilot comparisons in the field of measuring the combustion energy of alternative fuels.

Regarding the implementation of the CIPM MRA discussion was held on streamlining the procedure of intra-and interregional CMC review within TC 1.10 and updating of the list of technical experts on CMC review.

As part of the discussion of program COOMET P6/2021 "COOMET Roadmap for the Implementation of Decisions Related to the Redefinition of the Basic Units of the International System of Units (SI) for 2020-2025" a possibility was considered to hold in 2022 a joint seminar of COOMET and EURAMET on the challenges of reproducing Kelvin according to its new definition and its introduction into the practice of temperature measurement.

TC members also supported the idea of holding a COOMET seminar on pyrometry and discussed the appropriateness of developing a standard calibration procedure for instruments used to measure the surface temperature.

Constantin Bordianu (Moldova) presented to the participants information about EMPIR 18RPT03 MetForTC project "Traceable measurement capabilities for monitoring thermocouple performance".

The next TC 1.10 meeting is scheduled for autumn 2022.
