30.11.2020: 17th online meeting of COOMET TC 1.9 "Ionizing Radiation and Radioactivity"

The 17th meeting of TC 1.9 “Ionizing Radiation and Radioactivity” was held online on 30 November 2020, at which representatives of 8 COOMET member countries (Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Russia, Slovakia, Uzbekistan, Ukraine) and a representative of IAEA Ms. Paula Toroi took part.

The following issues were discussed during the meeting:

  • resolutions of the 30th COOMET Committee meeting with regard to TC 1.9 activity;
  • resolutions of the Joint Committee for Measurement Standards, adopted in 2020;
  • information about activity of the working groups of EURAMET CCRI, TС-RI;
  • work of TC 1.9 for the period since the previous meeting;
  • progress in implementation of ongoing projects within TC 1.9 (including those on comparisons, lasting more than 5 years);
  • other issues, provided for in the agenda (including update of the Regulations for TC 1.9, list of technical experts etc.).

The following main resolutions were adopted:

1) to organize during year 2021 discussion and implementation of activities of the COOMET Development Program with regard to TC 1.9;

2) to continue works on comparisons within TC 1.9, provided for in the COOMET Program of comparisons, inter alia:

- to complete the preparation of the report on comparisons under project 641/BY-а/14 “Comparison of the national standards of air kerma for x-radiation qualities used in radiation protection and diagnostic radiology” (pilot – BelGIM, Belarus);

- to complete the registration of the technical protocol of comparisons under project 389/RU/07 “Comparison of the well-type ionization chamber (IC) calibrations factors for the medical radionuclides ("Dosecalibrators")” (pilot – VNIIM, Russia).

3) to remove project 410/UА/07 “COOMET Regional comparisons of National standards of consumed dose unit in water for gamma-radiation Co-60” from the COOMET Work Program and to register in year 2021 a new project on this subject (pilot – VNIIFTRI, Russia).

4) to organize new COOMET comparisons in 2021:

- comparisons in the field of volumetric activity and equivalent equilibrium volume activity of radon;

- comparisons on measuring the activity of point gamma spectrometry sources of  OSGI type ;

- comparisons on measuring the activity of barium-133 radionuclide solution.

5) to promote project 600/RU/13 “Development of the calibration procedure of spectrometers with semiconductor detectors in terms of efficiency as a function of energy of gamma radiation” (changing the project coordinator to VNIIM, Russia) to the agreed one;

6) to request TC members to propose candidates to extend the list of COOMET technical experts on CMC review.

The participants also exchanged information about the current state of metrology in the field of ionizing radiation in NMIs of COOMET member countries.

The next TC meeting is scheduled for autumn 2021. The venue and format of the meeting will be decided, taking into account the situation with the Covid-19 pandemic.
